Free Web Hosts - Any Good?.

Although I have this paid domain ( eddiebird.co.uk ) I can never resist trying free webhosting services. On this page I'm going to list those that I'm trying and give a link to the website I've uploaded.

1) www.freehostingeu.com

According to the freehostingeu website:-

"We do not add any advertisements on free hosted sites (no banners, no popups, no text ads), so that you can enjoy absolutely banner-free site hosting at ZERO cost!!" So that's alright then.

Comments:-

Sign-up is easy. I like the short, snappy .eu.pn suffix to their sub-domains which makes for a neat web address. Site was easy to upload using the e-mailed info. Site seems to load and open quickly. No sign of any ads.

2) www.x10hosting.com

According to the x10 hosting website:-

It's super-easy and completely FREE! No strings attached. ( I like free ).

Comments:-

Again, sign-up is easy. They have a short, snappy .x10.mx suffix to their sub-domains which makes for a neat web address. Site was easy to upload using the e-mailed info. Site seems to load and open quickly. No ads have appeared so far.

Note added on 2/10/14 - Received email warning of "Account Inactivity Final Warning" - the host requires you to sign in to your account once a month to keep the site alive. Seems a small price to pay for a free site and is presumably aimed at removing sites that are not maintained.

Note added on 11/11/14 - Site has been suspended for lack of traffic. That's a shame, x10hosting tends to do rather too much nagging (see 2/10/14 note above) and I suggest avoiding them.

3) www.hostinger.co.uk

According to the hostinger website:-

No annoying banners. No annoying pop-ups. No text links. No mandated forum posting. Your website will be 100% ad free forever.

Sign-up was easy. Here you get a nice short .url.ph suffix to their sub-domains which makes for a neat web address. Site was easy to upload using the e-mailed info. Site seems to load and open quickly. No ads have appeared so far.

4) www.freehostingnoads.net

According to the freehostingnoads website:-

Free Web Hosting No Ads No text links. No annoying pop-ups. No annoying banners. No mandated forum posting. Your web site will be 100 percent ad FREE forever!

Apologies for any errors, but whilst I'll take every care to keep things accurate, I cannot take responsibility for any mistakes.

free web hosting

The web hosts I'm trying out here offer all offer a free sub-domain and claim to be advert free.

The websites I've uploaded for testing are slightly simplified versions of 'eddiebird.co.uk'. All the sites are so called "static HTML" and are rendered as such. I have not used PHP or MySQL databases etc. although they may well be available. Also the sites may well offer automated installation of some popular programs such as Wordpress or Joomla, but sometimes these are limited to just a few packages or may be missing altogether.

The sites I've uploaded also have a different appearance. This is because I find it very useful to have some free websites in order to practice my HTML5/CSS3 and to test them live.

You may only get limited support on free accounts, but at the same time if the Hoster provides a poor service (i.e. excessive downtime, slow loading of your site or ads being forced on) then you are hardly likely to sign up for a paid account.

So far my experience with free web-hosts has been surprisingly good. One or two providers were disappointing, and accordingly I've not presented them here. The ones listed on the left I've found to be very good if sometimes a little limited if your ambitions are higher than a simple site.
